Solid takes, Shaqattack.
No argument there that LBJ is probably the superior talent.
But Dr. J was the better player because he came up bigger in the playoffs. Tho he rang up only 1 NBA title, he won 2 ABA titles as well.
Check out Dr. J's stats during the 76 season: Led the league in scoring, 5th in rebounds, 7th in assists, 3rd in steals, & 7th in blocks. 8th in FG% and 7th in 3FG% as well.
He stepped up in the playoffs, and peaked in the Finals vs the Denver Nuggets (37.7 ppg, plus 45 points and game winning basket in game one, on the road, 14 boards, 6 assists, 3 steals & 2.2 blocks). All against quality opponents (65-19 Nuggets with 2 hall of famers in Issel & Thompson, plus all-time defender at forward, Jones, spearheaded by Hall of fame coach Larry Brown).
Although Dr. J didn't reach that level again, he made 16 All-Star teams and won 3 other MVPs. In addition to high peak value, he was also durable.
In the regular season, Dr. J averaged 24.2 ppg, but stepped up in the playoffs, and some more in 33 NBA/ABA finals: 28.1 ppg. NBA Finals alone, he is 8th best all-time with 25.5 ppg.
More importantly, Dr. J's MVP in 1981 was the first in near 20 years for a non-center to win the award. |

I'm still in this project. Haven't had the time to come up with a good list yet. I will post it shortly. |

I don't mind conducting this project with 8-10 people, as long as everyone else is interested.
We've seen what happens when you let anyone's vote count, I'd rather have too few good voters than too many lousy ones. |
